This Tea Estate was developed by the pioneer Col. Sir James Buckingham C.I.E. While Sir W.G Mckercher was Superintendent from 1922 to 1931, and it was here at Amgoorie that his invention of the CTC machine in 1931, revolutionized tea manufacture for ever. Amgoorie is situated on the South bank of the river Brahmaputra and has a common boundary with Nagaland, while Amguri town which derives its name from the garden is close by. The name itself comes from the word ‘AAM’ meaning Mango and ‘GURI’ meaning roots of the Mango tree, as there were a lot of old Mango trees in the area. The two other divisions of Amgoorie are Tiru which literally means salt water in the Tai Ahom language, and Tiphook which means water that is white and clean, due to the rivulets that run through the division. The New Factory constructed in 2010 is one of the most modern ,highly hygienic and environment friendly in the Food Processing Industry. The constant up gradation of planting materials with superior clones over the years, has given Amgoorie teas the status of being amongst the top CTC gardens in Assam with a quality that is sought after, both within the country and abroad.
